Dyslexia. It’s a word that can feel heavy for families hearing it for the first time, but understanding what it means is the first step toward helping your child succeed.
Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability that affects a person’s ability to read, spell, write, and sometimes speak. It is one of the most common learning disabilities, affecting an estimated 5–20% of the population. Despite its prevalence, dyslexia is often misunderstood and sometimes goes unidentified for years.
It is important to understand that dyslexia is not a reflection of intelligence. Children with dyslexia are often bright, creative, and capable learners — they simply process language differently. The challenges they face are rooted in the way their brains decode and process the sounds of language (phonological processing), not in a lack of effort or ability.
Early identification is key. Some common signs to look for include difficulty learning letter names and sounds, trouble rhyming, slow or inaccurate reading, difficulty with spelling, and avoidance of reading activities. If you notice these patterns in your child, it may be worth seeking an evaluation.
At Blossoming Minds Therapy, we take a multi-sensory approach to dyslexia intervention, including the Orton-Gillingham methodology. This evidence-based approach engages visual, auditory, and kinesthetic pathways to help children build the foundational skills they need for reading, writing, and spelling success.
As speech-language pathologists, we are uniquely qualified to address the underlying language components of dyslexia that are often overlooked. Because dyslexia is fundamentally a language-based disorder, our expertise in language development and processing allows us to provide comprehensive intervention that targets the root of reading difficulties.
If you suspect your child may have dyslexia or another language-based learning disability, we encourage you to reach out. Early intervention can make a tremendous difference in a child’s academic journey and self-confidence.
